Only pair your phone and satellite link via Bluetooth through the Bullitt Satellite Messenger App. It will not work using the general settings menu on your phone.
Getting to know your motorola defy satellite link
The motorola defy satellite link is contextually aware. It will look to send messages and check-ins over an IP connection before it even tries to use the satellite constellation. This was developed to optimise your satellite subscription package.
During our testing we have noticed that mobile devices treat the lack of cellular coverage in many different ways. This can mean that although the device looks as if it has a small level of coverage, in practice it is searching for signal. This can effectively block the satellite link’s ability to connect to satellite.
To overcome this issue it is best practice to turn off your mobile data*. To do this just use the ‘quick settings’ or ‘control centre’ menu on your device.
So when you are in an area where the cell coverage goes in and out regularly, or where the signal is very weak even when you do have coverage, to ensure satellite coverage just pair the motorola defy satellite link and switch off your data connection to connect to satellite.
Mobile handsets treat lack of signal in different ways. By following this tip, your phone will not try to send messages over the cellular network where they could get ‘stuck’. The phone will send them through your motorola defy satellite link via the satellite connection.
When you get back into good coverage you should return the phone usual connection mode.
* You can also disable all data connections by putting the device into ‘AirPlane’ mode through the ‘quick settings’ or ‘control centre’ menu on your device. This may mean you will need to re-pair the satellite link via Bluetooth on your phone.

We always like to hear about your experiences in using the motorola defy satellite link. Please contact us at support@motorolarugged.com
We are working through the feedback to develop the user and app experience. Software and firmware updates are being developed so look for notifications to update your application.
To connect to a satellite, you need to be outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
Bullitt Satellite uses GEO Satellite constellations that are located over the equator. Depending on which hemisphere of the earth you are connecting from will depend on the location of the Satellite.
To optimise your satellite connection, it is recommended that you place your satellite link in the general direction of the satellite. Typically, in the northern hemisphere this will be in a southerly direction. In the southern hemisphere, you should try to face northerly.
Ideally you need a clear view of the sky, so ensure your body isn’t blocking the connection.
Clear view of the sky typically means out of any wooded area, with no foliage interrupting the sight of the sky.
Pair the motorola defy satellite link to your phone via Bluetooth. Open the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app on your phone.
Within the app tap the Bluetooth icon at the top right hand side of the screen, this will open the ‘Connectivity Panel’. This will show you the status of your device – Is it Bluetooth Connected and/or Connected to Satellite.

To connect to the satellite constellation, you will need to be outdoors with a clear view of the sky to obtain a connection.
Your device should connect to satellite after about 90 seconds.
When you tap the Bluetooth / Satellite icon at the top right of the app, the ‘connectivity panel’ will open. This is where you can check your phone’s status – whether it is connected to the motorola defy satellite link via Bluetooth, or whether it is connected to the satellite constellation.

When you are trying to connect to satellite, ensure that you are outside with a clear view of the sky. Ensure that you are away from buildings and other obstructions that may interfere with establishing a satellite connection.
Within the connectivity panel you will be able to check connection status of your device. If the satellite signal is not strong enough the signal strength indicator will display on the connectivity panel. This is an orange icon to the left of the app screen.

This orange signal broken icon indicates you will be unable to connect to satellite.
This orange signal icon will disappear when the signal strength is strong enough.

On the satellite link there is a Satellite LED. This is the LED next to the charge port – it indicates whether the device is connected to satellite or not.
When the satellite link is first switched on the Satellite LED will flash red. If the device is not connected to satellite, it will continue to flash red once every 10 seconds.
When the device is first connected to the satellite, the Satellite LED will flash green 5 times.
To indicate the continued connection it will flash green once every 10 seconds.
To respond in a message from the Bullitt Messenger Application, you do not have to enter your credit card details or activate a subscription plan.
The motorola defy satellite link allows you to message anyone, even when you do not have WiFi or Cellular signal. It uses a satellite constellation to transmit the message, via Bullitt Satellite Messenger.
The person you are sending the message to does not need to have the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app downloaded to receive the message. They will receive the full text of your message into their own SMS / text gateway.
It is only if they want to respond to the message do they need to download the Bullitt Satellite Messager app. The following sets show you how to obtain a free account:
- Download the App
- Register on the Bullitt Satellite portal
- Sign into the App
- Send your message
You will receive a message in your standard SMS gateway, this give the full message and a link to tap, if you wish to respond just tap the link.
Tap the link in the SMS message, this will take you to the Bullitt website to download the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app.

Tap the appropriate link for your mobile phone either Android Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Sending a message via the Bullitt Satellite Messenger is as simple as any standard messaging platform. You select who you want to message, type your message, send and await the reply.
The main difference between Bullitt Satellite Messenger and any standard messaging platform is that you can send messages even when you have no cellular signal. You can also send a message to any contact irrespective of the type of phone they are using.
To ensure that you get the most from your satellite subscription plan, messages are limited to ~140 characters. If you are connected to satellite, as you type your message you will see the rocket icon slowly turn blue as you type more characters. If you exceed the limit, it will turn red, as will the characters in your message, ti indicate that you have exceeded the limit.
To test sending a message over satellite, please ensure that your phone’s internet connection is disabled by turning off Wi-Fi and disabling the data connection. However, please ensure that Bluetooth remains enabled on your phone to connect to the satellite link.
NOTE: The app will always send messages over cellular or Wi-Fi if it can. If your message has been sent/received over satellite it will be marked by an orange triangle.
IMPORTANT NOTE: ANY MESSAGE SENT OR RECEIVED VIA SATELLITE WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM YOUR MONTHLY ALLOCATION.

SOS
In a crisis, contact with the emergency services can save your life.
But not all crises are immediately life-threatening: if you break down in the middle of nowhere, your bike, boat or skis malfunction, or you’ve just rambled too far off the track, a lack of signal could quickly escalate an annoyance into an emergency.
Our satellite SOS service puts a reliable lifeline in your pocket, wherever you roam and whatever goes wrong.
Activation of this feature transmits an alert signal directly to a global response centre. They will subsequently notify the relevant emergency responders, such as local law enforcement agencies, highway patrol, the coast guard, or search and rescue teams, based on your GPS location and personal information.
IMPORTANT NOTE: UNLESS YOU HAVE A PREMIUM SUBSCRIPTION WITH FOCUSPOINT YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY COSTS THAT OCCUR FROM THE USE OF THE SOS FEATURE. THE INAPPROPRIATE OR FALSE USE OF SOS MAY RESULT IN INCURRING ADDITIONAL, AND POSSIBLY SUBSTANTIAL, LIABILITY CHARGES.
To be able to use the Bullitt Satellite SOS service you must have an active Bullitt Satellite Messenger plan and link it with your Bullitt-compatible device.
To ensure our global response centre can respond appropriately to your Emergency situation you can enter the contact details of anyone you want to notified in the case of an emergency. You can add multiple contacts. is accessible via https://app.bullitt.com/sos.

Within the portal can also enter additional personal information that may assist the response centre should there be an incident.
There are two ways to raise an SOS, when you are in genuine need of emergency assistance, tap and hold the SOS button in the app (3 seconds), or press and hold the physical key on a Bullitt connected device (typically 5 seconds).
Within the app, you will then be asked a quick and simple series of pre-canned questions to help the SOS response center staff establish a basic understanding of the circumstances of your assistance request.
This includes questions about whether you are alone or with others; whether it is you or someone else needing help; and whether you are injured, sick, or in danger for other reasons. Once complete, these responses are also sent on to the SOS response center, with an update of your location.
You can then engage in a two-way conversation with the SOS response center, responding to any questions they ask and providing them with any further information about your situation that may be relevant. They may also offer advice or guidance, and update you as your case is escalated to relevant authorities to dispatch local emergency responders to your location.
If you are unable to respond to these questions for any reason, your SOS alert will still be managed by the response centre.
Your emergency contacts will also be contacted by the SOS response center.
Open the Bullitt Satellite Messenger App.

The SOS button is in the bottom left hand corner of your app screen.
To initiate the alert tap SOS button in the app, this then opens the SOS sequence.

Press and hold the SOS icon displayed on the screen for three (3)seconds.

When an SOS is raised, an alarm notification, along with your location, are sent to the FocusPoint International SOS response center.
You will then be asked a quick and simple series of pre-canned questions, (you can skip these questions at anytime and enter into a two-way text conversation with the response center).

Once complete, these responses are also sent on to the SOS response center, with an update of your location.

You can also engage in a two-way conversation with the SOS response center.
If you have accidentally sent an SOS message it is possible to cancel this by pressing and holding the orange button on the side of the device.

You can also cancel an SOS directly through the Bullitt Satellite Messenger app, at any time by pressing the “Close active SOS” button.

To be able to use the Bullitt Satellite SOS service you must have an active Bullitt Satellite Messenger plan and link it with your Bullitt-compatible device.
The SOS service in unpaired mode activates the same initial SOS alert to FocusPoint International, identifying you and giving your location only.
The main difference is you will not be able to enter into a two-way conversation with the response centre. The response centre will use the location to decide what the ‘appropriate’ response will be.
They will also try and contact the users defined ’emergency contact’. This is setup in the ‘SOS settings’ on the portal app.bullitt.com. It is recommended that you stay in this position as this is where help will be sent.
SOS Activation in unpaired mode:
The motorola defy satellite link can be used paired via bluethooth to your phone or ‘standalone’. Standalone the device must be connected to satellite to be able to communicate for SOS or Check-In
SOS Alert unpaired:
Press and hold the physical orange key on the side of the device for five (5) seconds.
